International students face unique challenges and difficulties before, during, and after studying in a foreign country. The Bangkok School of Tropical Medicine International Student Center (ISC) is the primary contact point and one-stop-shop for all international students of the Faculty before, during, and after their studies. The ISC provides integrated support, information and resource services, counseling and advice, and emergency assistance, in English (yes, we do also speak Thai). The purpose of the ISC is to serve international students with support and advice to help make your stay here as productive, interesting, rewarding and enjoyable as possible. The Center is located in the Bangkok School of Tropical Medicine Office area on the 3rd Floor of the Chamlong Harinasuta Building, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University. Specific Functions: The ISC facilitates and coordinates TropMed international student applications, assists students with scholarship sources, immigration matters, accommodation, international student orientation, cross-cultural adjustment, and academic and personal issues. The ISC organizes pre-departure, arrival and orientation, and returning home information and programs to make the experience of studying at the Faculty of Tropical Medicine the best that it can be. The Center liaises with potential students, applicants, sponsors, etc. It responds (in person or by e-mail, post, fax, telephone) to questions and requests for information from prospective students, admitted students, current students, and past students. It provides liaison between students and other parts of the University, and with their home governments or other sponsoring agencies. It helps with international student immigration-related matters, such as visa extensions/changes of visa status/re-entry permits/90-day check-in, etc. It helps international students to resolve all kinds of practical matters, for example, opening a bank account, problems with telephone bills, settling disputes with classmates or roommates, transferring funds from their home country, helping family members to obtain visitors' visas, etc. It provides a temporary poste-restante/postal address service and receives faxes for international students and notifies them when they have received a fax. Students may send faxes from the ISC for a cost-recovery fee. The ISC maintains an up-to-date ISC website with information specifically for international students. |
