The Unit was formed as a collaboration between the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok and The Centre for Tropical Diseases, Nuffield Department of Medicine, John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford in 1979.  It is supported by the Wellcome Trust of Great Britain.

We are based in the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Bangkok and are closely associated with the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) in Mae Sot near the western border of Thailand.  We also collaborate with Mae Sot Hospital,Sappasitprasong Hospital in Ubon Ratchatani, Udon Thani Hospital and Mahosot Hospital in Vientiane, Lao PDR.

Our main areas of research interest are malaria and melioidosis.  There are ongoing studies of fungal infections(
Cryptococcus neoformans and Penicillium marneffei) in AIDS  and we have recently started work on tuberculosis and leptospirosis in Thailand and Vitamin B1 deficiency in Lao PDR.

We have a sister unit in Viet Nam at the Centre for Tropical Diseases, Ho Chi Minh City.
