Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University together with SEAMEO TROPMED Network, Parasitology and Tropical Medicine Association of Thailand, Tropical Medicine Alumni Association, Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU) and Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health are hosting the Joint International Tropical Medicine Meeting (JITMM) 2018 during 12 - 14 December 2018 at Amari Watergate, Bangkok.
In the opening ceremony, Professor Srivicha Krudsood, Deputy Dean for Research, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University and Chairperson of Organizing Committee starts off the program with the meeting report, followed by two welcoming addresses from Dr.Sombat Thanphasertsuk, M.D., Senior Expert In Prevention Medicine from Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health and Mr.David Burton, Chief Operating Officer of Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU). The meeting is officially opened by Associate Professor Dr. Pratap Singhasivanon, Dean of the Faculty of Tropical Medicne, Mahidol University.
The theme of JITMM 2018 is “Innovation, Translation and Impact in Tropical Medicine”. Not only that this conference is the biggest Tropical Medicine conference in the South-east Asia, it has also provided the perfect platform to exchange the scientific knowledge. Each year, hundreds of medical personnel, doctor, scientist and researcher have been engaged and further their research findings. These include some of technical developments and innovations in health and medicine. Their topics of interest are malaria, dengue, helminthiasis, fungal and bacterial infections as well as epidemiology of various tropical diseases.
In the opening ceremony, keynote speaker Professor Ric Price, Menzies School of Health Research, Australia and University of Oxford, UK delivers the 24th Chumlong-Tranakchit Harinhasuta Lecture entitled “The safe and effective redical cure of malaria”.
This year, 3 Tropical Medicine Alumni Association awards go to Professor Akira Kaneko, Professor of Global Health, Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell biology, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, Dr.Tawatchai Srestasupana Director of Maesot Hospital, Tak province. and Professor Dr. Tawadchai Suppadit, Vice Persident, Planning and Development Strategies of Walailak University.
Joint International Tropical Medicine Meeting, now held for 22 years, is a platform that has provided opportunities for Thai and foreign researchers to communicate and collaborate. In JITMM 2018, more than 800 participants have registered from around the world. There are 166 oral presentations and 120 poster presentations from researchers and students. The meeting will catalyze sharing of new knowledge in prevention and treatment of tropical diseases and strengthen research cooperation leading to outcomes that benefit the global society.
In the last meeting session on 14 December 2018, there will be a special plenary session by the winner of the Sornchai Looareesuwan Medal, an award given each year by the Faculty of Tropical Medicine to honor world class researchers who have devoted lives to fight neglected tropical diseases. The awardees this year is Professor Donald Petyer McManus, QIMR Berghofer Medical Resarch Institute, Brisbane, Australia, whose lecture is entitled “New tools in the NTDS armoury” following by an official announcement of the upcoming 20th International Congress for Tropical Medicine and Malaria (ICTMM) which will be held concurrently with the Joint International Tropical Medicine Meeting (JITMM) 2020 during 20-24 September 2020 at BITEC Convention Centre, Bangkok.
