   Course description
     • Track I Clinical Tropical Medicine
TMCD 510
Parasite diseases
2 (2-0-0)
Basic knowledge of diseases caused by various parasites in the tropics, including the extent of problems and clinical manifestations. The subject is divided into various topics according to the systems involved, e.g., the gastro-intestinal system and the liver, the respiratory system, the central nervous system, the blood, and the lymphatics.

TMCD 511
Non-Parasite Diseases
2 (2-0-0)
Comprises basic knowledge of common non-parasitic diseases in the tropics. The lectures and discussion on common infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, toxins, and common non-infectious diseases found in the tropics.

TMCD 512
Clinical Laboratory Methods for Research
2 (2-0-4)
The basic laboratory investigations and common techniques used in clinical research. These include principles and interpretation of laboratory results in hematology, biochemistry and nutrition, common laboratory techniques used in immunology, bacteriology, biochemistry, genetics and molecular studies.

TMCD 513
Principles of Clinical Research
2 (1-2-0)
Basic knowledge in research methodology and application in etiologic study and clinical trials, protocol writing, diagnostic tests, good clinical practice, designing case-record forms, sampling and allocation, ethical issues and consent form, conduct of the study, data management, publication and presentation of the research results.

     • Track II Clinical Pharmacology
TMCD 514
Clinical Tropical Pharmacology
2 (2-0-0)
The subject covers the lectures on principles of clinical pharmacology which include two major processes i.e., pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. The subject also provides the understanding and correct interpretation of pharmacokinetic parameters and significance to clinical application. Other major topics include causes of variability in drug response with special focus on pharmacokinetic factors, drug evaluation in man, methods in pharmacokinetic and drug metabolism studies, as well as principles of drug analyses.

TMCD 515
Clinical Pharmacokinetics I
2 (2-0-0)
Prerequisite: TMCD 514
The subject consists of lectures on the basic pharmacokinetics of drugs used in tropical diseases and their applications to clinical usage. This group of drugs include antimalarials, antiprotozoals, antihelminthics, anti-HIVs and antibiotics. The subject emphasizes on the harmacokinetic interactions between these drugs and other drugs such as antipyretics and emetics which are used concurrently.

TMCD 516
Clinical Pharmacokinetics II
2 (1-2-0)
Prerequisite: TMCD 515
The subject covers lectures and practices on the planning, writing-up research protocol of pharmacokinetic studies. Various techniques which are imperative for clinical research trial, laboratory techniques used for drug level analyses particularly high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) techniques are included.

TMCD 517
Evaluation of Clinical Pharmacological Research
2 (1-2-0)
Prerequisite: TMCD 516
The subject consists of lectures and practical sessions on evaluation of clinical pharmacological research and pharmacokinetic analysis of important chemotherapeutic drugs used in tropical diseases by computer software. The tropical diseases include malaria, amoebiasis, giardiasis, filariasis, schistosomiasis, opisthorchiasis, paragonimiasis and intestinal helminthiases.

     • Free elective subjects
TMCD 518
Malaria
2 (2-0-0)
The course consists of lectures and demonstrations on clinical and laboratory aspects of malaria with special emphasis on planning and conducting clinical research.

TMCD 519
AIDS
2 (2-0-0)
The contents of AIDS including epidemiology, virology and immunology, immunopathogenesis, host immune response to HIV virus, diagnosis, clinical manifestations, treatment, prophylaxis and prevention especially AIDS vaccines together with the comprehensive information about psychosocial impacts and HIV counseling leading to holistic cares of HIV- infected patients

TMCD 520
Seminar in Clinical Tropical Pharmacology
2 (0-4-0)
Prerequisite: TMCD 517
The subject consists of group discussions in the form of seminar on current topics of clinical tropical pharmacology published in scientific and medical journals.

TMCD 528
Clinical Immunology
2 (2-0-0)
Contents of the subject involve diseases and abnormalities of immune system and emphasize on the importance of immunity in host defence against pathogens or foreign bodies and immunopathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, malignancies and organ transplantation with application of proper investigations and patient cares.

     • Special topics
TMCD 601
Special Topics in Clinical Tropical Medicine
3 (2-2-0)
