About us
In 1966 the Department of Tropical Nutrition and Food Science is established in the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, in order to teach and train postgraduate students, to conduct scientific researches as well as to provide laboratory services concerning nutritional disorders and nutritional information.
 
  Head departments from 1966-2008 are as followings:
  1. Professor emeritus Panata Migasena (1969-1994)
  2. Associate Professor Supranee Changbumrung (1994-2002)
  3. Associate Professor Songsak Petmitr (2002-2010)
  4. Dr. Dumrongkiet Arthan (2010-present)
   
The Department comprises of 9 academic staffs, 3 supportive staffs and 5 consultants. The staff are involved in teaching postgraduate students attending international courses leading to a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (D.T.M. & H.), M. Sc. and Ph. D. programs of Tropical Medicine. Short training course for Food Safety and Food Control was also provided.

The academic staffs have on going collaborations in various fields of research activities, involving nutritional problem in Thailand in relation to malnutrition, obesity, dislipidemia, coronary heart diseases and cancer. Nutrigenomics and molecular carcinogenesis of cancers in Thai patient such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, colorectal cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma are also investigated. In addition, the department is also responsible for technical services and information on nutrition distributed to the public. Laboratory services include the determination of vitamin B1, B2, and B6 in human red blood cell. Presently, short training course on “Methods in Nutritional Assessment and Research” is launched annually.
 
The staff members are invited to give lectures to undergraduate and graduate students in renowned institutions i.e. Rangsit University, Khon Kaen University, Mae Fah Luang University, Thammasat University, Srinakarintarawiroj University and Faculty of Science, Mahidol University as well as invited to be co-advisors as well as external examiners in various universities.
