Background

Dr. Jaranit Kaewkungwal is the director of the Center of Excellence for Biomedical and Public Health Informatics, otherwise known as BIOPHCS where he leads a team of 35 data managers, statisticians, and support staff. He also has lectures on research methodology and biostatistics at the Bangkok School of Tropical Medicine.

BIOPHICS works in collaboration with many projects, providing the expert data management and statistical support needed. Dr. Jaranit Kaewkungwal also provides consultation regarding study design, methods of data collection and data analysis to students and national and international researchers.

Research

BIOPHICS focuses on training, research and services, and as the director of the center Dr. Jaranit Kaewkungwal is involved in all three. His research activities can be group into three main areas - data management and analysis for clinical trials and epidemiological studies, ethical Issues in conducting human subject research and translational research in health informatics.

Dr. Jaranit Kaewkungwal’s current projects include an evaluation for HIV-uninfected participants of the RV 144 HIV vaccine efficacy trial and an evaluation of different one-year boosts after HIV vaccines, both funded by U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command.

Dr. Jaranit Kaewkungwal has severed on the Ethics Committee of the Faculty for over ten years and has developed “IRB Metrics” for use as guidance in improving its functionality and to help to help guide malaria researchers in planning their future proposals.

With support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, WHO, and Global Fund, Dr. Jaranit Kaewkungwal led the BIOPHICS team in developing an electronic malaria information system now used by the Thai Ministry of Public Health as parts of their malaria elimination efforts. The system has also been recently piloted in Bhutan.
