TMCD 503 Introduction to Clinical Research

Prerequisite: None
 
Basic research methodology and application in medical study, including protocol writing, clinical trials, diagnosis tests, etiologic study, good clinical practice, designing case-record forms, sampling and allocation, ethical issues and consent form, conduct of the study, data management, publication and presentation.

Pre-travel counseling, travel-related diseases prevention, travelers’ malaria, travelers’ diarrhea, water purification for travelers, international health control, underwater hazard, vaccination care of returned travelers.

Observation on the patients admitted to the hospital(s) in the endemic areas of selected tropical diseases in order to gain direct experience of  how to diagnose tropical infectious diseases using proper laboratory investigation clinical manifestation and discussion on the treatment and care for these patients. Introduction to primary health care and referral system for care of tropical infections diseases included.

Statistical methods and their application in clinical research consisting of basic concepts, statistical methodology with practical examples from clinical research.   Statistical methods for assessing both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics for assessing role of chance or error from sampling.  Correlation, linear regression, survival analysis and sample size estimation.
