Personal Statement

I have been working as a staff in the Vaccine Trial Centre (VTC) and Department of Clinical Tropical Medicine, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Thailand for 16 years. I oversee three academic areas: research, service, and teaching.

Research:  As a senior staff in the Department, I have been a co-investigator of many national and international trials. My main responsibilities consist of reviewing and revising essential documents, screening and enrolling volunteers, evaluating the quality of the vaccines, monitoring safety and reporting any adverse effects while preparing for conference proceedings or writing papers for publication. Most of my work engages many stakeholders during the research process. Some examples of vaccine trials that I had been involved are

- A phase 3 randomized placebo-controlled trial, evaluating a prime-boost vaccine strategy using ALVAC prime accompanied by a boost with AIDSVAX B/E (RV144)
- A phase 3 HPV vaccine study to evaluate the safety, immune response, and efficacy of Gardasil; an evaluation of a 48 week ALVAC-HIV AIDSVAX B/E Vaccination regimen in Thailand
- A phase 2/3, randomized controlled to assess the safety and immunogenicity of a recombinant acellular pertussis vaccine containing genetically inactivated pertussis toxin and filamentous haemagglutinin in combination with tetanus and reduced-dose diphtheria vaccines (TdaP[PTgen/FHA]).
- An open-label, randomized study to compare the immune responses elicited by intramuscular and intradermal injections with inactivated seasonal influenza vaccine among the older age group. Over the last 5 years, several peer-reviewed articles and international conference proceeding on a topic of vaccine were published.
In the future, I plan to prepare, conduct, and lead several upcoming collaborative projects that are multi-disciplinary and across institutional settings. I will also be a mentor for junior staff and newcomers to this field.

Service work: I work as a medical doctor in the Hospital for Tropical Diseases under Mahidol University. I work at the Out Patient Department six hours per week, and look after in-patient upon consultation. I advise patients – locals, expatriates, and inbound and outbound travelers – about dermatology problems. In addition, I also contribute to public healthcare in Thailand by being a public speaker about many tropical skin diseases, zoster and HPV vaccines via conventional and social media.

Currently, I also oversee the social media outreach of the Department of Tropical Medicine, on Facebook and the department’s website to give information and answer questions from healthcare providers. My future plan is to develop an interactive electronic learning information database aimed at general practitioners and other healthcare providers.
Teaching and supervision: I have taught in 2 undergraduate levels, and 5 post-graduate levels courses. Additionally, I am a course Director of “introduction to clinical research” course for Master Degree students, which I integrated my experience on doing vaccine research into my lessons, namely “informed consent process”, “Good Clinical Practice compliant document”, “proposal writing”, and “standard operating protocol”.  I have also constantly been an advisor and co-advisor of MSc and PhD students for more than 10 years.
