ABOUT

        Clinical Malaria Research Unit was established in late 2013 and is located on the 2nd floor of the Sornchai Looareesuwan Building (Eastern side), Faculty of Tropical Medicine to support research activities in the Faculty of Tropical Medicine. The research activities of the unit is focused on malaria disease mainly in Clinical aspect both hospital based and field based researchs with the aims; to determine the patho-physiogenesis in severe malaria, to investigate the new malaria treatment including adjuvant therapies, to determine the safety and efficacy for malaria treatment, etc. The unit has collaboration with Phop-Phra Hospital, Tak and Suan-Phung Hospital as well as The Rajanagarindra Tropical Disease International Centre (RTIC), Ratchaburee to study in the field works.

        We also collaborated with Department of Radiology, Ramathibodi-Hospital, Faculty of Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital; Department of Pathobiology, Faculty of Science; Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Allied Health Science, Thammasat University, Thailand; Bureau of Vector Borne Disease; Department of Medical Science, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand; Department of Immunology and Medicine, USAMC-AFRIMS, Thailand; (National Center for Global Health and Medicine, Japan) and Department of Pediatrics, Columbia University, U.S.A., and McLaughlin Center for Molecular Medicine, University of Toronto, Canada.

Current activities

          The mission of unit has served the mission of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine to pursue the mission in three major TropMed Strategies, Teaching Excellence, Research Excellence and Outstanding Clinical Outcome. The details of each activity are showed as follows:

Teaching Excellence:
          Unit’s staff has involved in the teaching activity of the Mahidol-Bangkok School of Tropical Medicine both in-house lectures and field works, particularly in 8 courses for Graduate and Diploma students of Faculty of Tropical Medicine as listed below:

Research Excellence:
          Antimalarial drug trials, both efficacy and safety aspects, are mainly conducted. We are also studying on the patho-physiogenesis in severe malaria.

          • New combination therapies for malaria
          • Malaria field studies on efficacy and tolerability of antimalarial drug
          • Hematology profiles of malaria
          • Pathogenesis of severe malaria in Thailand

Medical Care Services
          Medical care service is one of the main functions of the unit. Our medical staffs have involved in activities of Bangkok Hospital for Tropical Diseases (both in-house works and field works).
