ผศ.ดร.กิตติพงษ์ ฉายศิริ อาจารย์ภาควิชาปรสิตหนอนพยาธิ ร่วมกับเจ้าหน้าที่กลุ่มงานวิจัยสัตว์ป่า กรมอุทยานแห่งชาติฯ ในการสำรวจนกชายเลนและพาหะนำโรค เพื่อศึกษาบทบาทของนกอพยพต่อระบาดวิทยาและนิเวศวิทยาของโรคติดเชื้อ ในพื้นที่อุทยานแห่งชาติหาดเจ้าไหม เกาะลิบง จังหวัดตรัง และชายทะเลในเขตอำเภอทุ่งหว้า จังหวัดสตูล ระหว่างวันที่ 17-25 มี.ค. 2565″
คณาจารย์ภาควิชาปรสิตหนอนพยาธิ ได้รับคัดเลือกในการถ่ายภาพ Portrait ของสำนักบริหารการศึกษาในธีม “Young, Smart, International Look” ประกอบด้วย รศ. ดร.ภูมิ อดิศักดิ์วัฒนา รศ. ดร.อุรุษา แทนขำ ผศ. ดร.กิตติพงษ์ ฉายศิริ และ อ. ดร.อรวรรณ พู่พิสุทธิ์
วันที่ 22 ธันวาคม 2564 คณะเวชศาสตร์เขตร้อน มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล จัดพิธีปิดการแข่งขันกีฬาสีบุคลากร คณะเวชศาสตร์เขตร้อน ประจำปี 2564 “TropMed Sport Day 2021” โดยลำดับแรกเป็นกิจกรรม “ชาว ’ เขตร้อนรวมใจ ออกกำลังกายแอโรบิกเพื่อสุขภาพครั้งที่ 1” ให้บุคลากรคณะ ฯ ร่วมออกกำลังกายตามเพลงจากเสียงตามสาย ทั้งนี้บุคลากรทางภาควิชาฯ ได้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมออกกำลังกายแอโรบิกเพื่อสุขภาพในครั้งนี้ด้วย
ศิษย์เก่าของภาควิชาปรสิตหนอนพยาธิ หลักสูตร คณะเวชศาสตร์เขตร้อน แม้จบไปแล้วยังมีความรู้สึกดี ๆ และผูกพัน ที่เป็นหุ้นส่วนระยะยาว หรือ Long-Term Partnership เป็นผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสีย หรือ Stakeholders อย่างแท้จริงของชุมชนในพื้นที่ ทั้งคุณขัชพัฒน์ และคุณพนิดา เมืองคำ ต่างทำงานในสำนักงานสาธารณสุขจังหวัดน่าน
ปรสิตหนอนพยาธิเป็นสัตว์ไม่มีกระดูกสันหลังที่ดำรงชีวิตอยู่ในร่ายกายคนและสัตว์ด้วยการดูดเลือดหรือแย่งสารอาหารจากร่างกายโฮสต์ทำให้เกิดพยาธิสภาพและโรคที่เกิดจากการติดเชื้อพยาธิเหล่านี้ จากลักษณะสัณฐานภายนอก สามารถจัดจำแนกได้เป็นพยาธิตัวกลม (nematodes) พยาธิตัวตืด (cestodes) และพยาธิใบไม้ (trematodes) ปัจจุบันมีการประเมินทางคณิตศาสตร์คาดว่าพยาธิในโลกนี้มีจำนวนกว่า 300,000 ชนิด โดยมีเพียงประมาณ 10% เท่านั้นที่ได้รับการระบุชนิดเรียบร้อยแล้ว แต่ในความเป็นจริงโลกกำลังเผชิญการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศรวมทั้งปัจจัยทางสิ่งแวดล้อมซึ่งนอกจากจะส่งผลต่อการสูญพันธุ์ของสัตว์รวมทั้งพยาธิแล้วแล้วยังส่งผล ต่อกระบวนการทางวิวัฒนาการที่รวดเร็วขึ้นด้วย โดยมีรายงานสถานะสปีชีส์คลุมเครือ (cryptic species) อยู่กว่า 2-3 ชนิดต่อชนิดของพยาธิ ซึ่งนักวิจัยมักพบประเด็นปัญหาในการจัดแบ่งขอบเขตความเป็นสปีชีส์อยู่เนืองๆ เนื่องจากยากที่จะระบุชนิดจากลักษณะสัณฐานภายนอกซึ่งมีความคล้ายคลึงกันและคลุมเครือ การวิเคราะห์จำเป็นต้องใช้เครื่องบ่งชี้ทางพันธุกรรม (molecular genetic marker) ที่เหมาะสม ซึ่งมีอยู่กว่า 10 ชนิดในปัจจุบัน และมักจะสร้างความสับสนในการเลือกใช้และตัดสินขอบเขตความเป็นสปีชีส์จากค่าระยะห่างทางพันธุกรรม ปัญหาที่มักเกิดขึ้นคือ ค่าเท่าใดจึงจะเรียกได้ว่ายังคงเป็นสปีชีส์เดียวกัน ค่าเท่าใดอยู่ในยังขอบเขตของสปีชีส์คลุมเครือ หรือค่าเท่าใดสามารถระบุได้ว่าอยู่ต่างจีนัส
แอปพลิเคชัน ABIapp นี้พัฒนาขึ้นสำหรับผู้ที่ต้องการตัวช่วยในการจำแนกชนิดของปรสิตหนอนพยาธิ โดยใช้ฐานข้อมูลพันธุกรรม (GenBank sequence database) ของเชื้อปรสิตหนอนพยาธิก่อโรคทั้งหมดที่เป็นปัจจุบันเพื่อกำหนดค่าขอบเขตของระดับชั้นทางอนุกรมวิธานตั้งแต่ระดับสปีชีส์ (species) ถึงอันดับ (order) โดยใช้ machine learning algorithm ใช้งานง่ายเพียงผู้ใช้มีค่าระยะห่างทางพันธุกรรมของเครื่องหมายพันธุกรรมระดับโมเลกุล (molecular genetic marker) ที่มักใช้ในการจัดจำแนกสปีชีส์ของเชื้อปรสิตหนอนพยาธิ (18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, ITS1, ITS2, COI, COII, cytB, ND1, 12S rRNA และ 16S rRNA) และกรอกข้อมูลดังกล่าว แอปพลิเคชันจะบอกถึงสถานะทางอนุกรมวิธานของตัวอย่างพร้อมแนะนำทางเลือกในกรณีที่เครื่องบ่งชี้ทางพันธุกรรมที่ใช้ยังไม่เหมาะสม
รางวัล DEAN’S LIST เป็นรางวัลที่มอบให้แก่นักศึกษาระดับบัณฑิตศึกษาที่มีผลการศึกษาดีเยี่ยม (GPA 4.00) ตลอดหลักสูตร และสำเร็จการศึกษาภายในระยะเวลาการศึกษาของหลักสูตร โดยมีผลงานตีพิมพ์ในวารสารวิชาการระดับนานาชาติไม่น้อยกว่า 1 เรื่อง โดยนักศึกษาที่ได้รับรางวัลจะได้รับโล่เกียรติยศและประกาศเกียรติคุณจากบัณฑิตวิทยาลัย มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล พร้อมทั้งบันทึกชื่อไว้ใน ‘DEAN’S LIST’ และในใบรายงานผลการศึกษา (Transcript)
MS. Abigail เป็นนักศึกษาชาวสิงคโปร์ เข้าศึกษาในระดับวิทยาศาสตร์มหาบัณฑิต ปีการศึกษา 2561 ที่สนใจงานวิจัยด้านโรคเขตร้อน โดยเฉพาะปรสิตหนอนพยาธิ จึงตัดสินใจเลือกทำวิจัยที่ภาควิชาปรสิตหนอนพยาธิ ในวิทยานิพนธ์หัวข้อ “NEMATODE SYSTEMATICS: MOLECULAR AND MORPHOLOGICAL TAXONOMY AS A TOOL FOR CLASSIFICATION AND IDENTIFICATION” โดยมีรองศาสตราจารย์ ดร. อุรุษา แทนขำ เป็นที่ปรึกษาหลัก
ด้วยความมานะ สนใจใฝ่รู้ ทำให้สามารถดำเนินงานวิจัยเสร็จสิ้นและสามารถสอบป้องกันวิทยานิพนธ์ได้ภายใน 2 ปีการศึกษา โดยสามารถจบการศึกษาพร้อมผลงานตีพิมพ์ในวารสาร PARASITES & VECTORS ซึ่งเป็นวารสารวิชาการนานาชาติในกลุ่ม Quartile1 (Q1) ด้าน Tropical Medicine และ Parasitology ในหัวข้อ “Evaluation and utility of mitochondrial ribosomal genes for molecular systematics of parasitic nematodes”

Abigail ได้ตัดสินใจศึกษาต่อในระดับปรัชาดุษฎีบัณฑิต สาขาอายุรศาสตร์เขตร้อน ปีการศึกษา 2563 ในแผนการเรียนที่ 1 (ทำเฉพาะงานวิจัยเพื่อวิทยานิพนธ์) เพื่อต่อยอดงานวิจัยเดิมให้ได้ผลสัมฤทธิ์สูงสุดในแง่นวัตกรรมการตรวจหาเชื้อพยาธิในสิ่งส่งตรวจที่หลากหลายต่อไป
Have you ever heard of this parasitic infection, “angiostrongylid worm” or “rat lung worm”? Believe it or not, Thai people are infected with this roundworm the most in the world. This parasite can be found in many continents globally, adapting and living well in different habitats and landscapes including urban community, peri-domestic and wilderness areas. They can parasitize a variety of animal hosts, especially invasive alien species such as rodents and mollusks, which are the definitive and intermediate hosts of the parasite, respectively. Ingestion of infective larvae contaminated in food and water is recognized as the main route of infection. The movement of parasitic larvae into the brain affects the nervous system causing eosinophilic meningitis and other neurological disorders. Consumption behavior and awareness of good hygiene are important factors in minimizing exposure to the parasitic diseases.
Let’s get to know more about this parasitic disease through a short cartoon story and the parasitic disease documentaries produced by the Department of Helminthology and the Educational Technology and Art Unit, the Faculty of Tropical Medicine.

A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine.
I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.
