Getting published in the right place: how to choose a journal and maximize impact factor

On September 27th, Dr Trevor Lane from the Edanz Group conducted the workshop “Writing Research Manuscripts That Have Impact”. Dr Lane is the Education Director and Senior Publication Consultant with Edanz, a company that provides services to help researchers improve their publication success.

The workshop had three main sections (1) Planning (2) Writing and (3) Maximising chances of publication. Each section contained key information, links to useful resources and a practical activity. During the workshop Dr Lane reminded authors that their goal was not only to publish but to be widely read and cited.

In section one Dr Lane covered what editors are looking for, how to choose a journal and journal rankings. He also reminded participants to always check if a journal is legitimate as there several fake journals that try to scam authors.

In section two he focused on the IMRaD (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion) approach to manuscript writing. He also went through the different ways in which impact can be evaluated. He reminded participants that many institutions are moving away from journal Impact Factors and looking at indicators at the article and researcher level, such as Altmetric scores.

In section three Dr Lane highlighted different ways in which authors can increase their chances of publication as well as ways researchers can evaluate their own study and manuscript. As part of this he discussed common complaints from reviewers and how to avoid them; including giving a useful summary on how to choose the right statistical test.

In the afternoon, Dr Lane held one-to-one consultations with researchers looking for specific advice on their ongoing publications. The workshop and consultations were greatly informative and gave the participants practical steps to take to improve their manuscripts and increase the chances of successful publication. We look forward to extending our partnership with Edanz and seeing greater publication success within the Faculty.
