Background

Dr. Jetsumon Prachumsri is Head of Mahidol Vivax Research Unit (MVRU). Her primary research area is the biology and transmission of malaria with emphasis on Plasmodium vivax. This includes studies of the mosquito vectors, establishing in vitro/ex vivo systems and conducting research to support development of new drugs and vaccines. Dr. Jetsumon is a key opinion leader on malaria elimination.

Research

Dr. Jetsumon Sattabongkot Prachumsri has over 30 years’ experience in malaria research, working with endemic populations in Asia (Thailand, Myanmar, China and Korea). She is world-renowned for malaria transmission studies, especially for P. vivax, the most prevalent species in the GMS and non-African countries, and which will be more challenging to eliminate. She has led the first field trial on ivermectin for malaria elimination in Asia and is Co-director of the ICEMR Southeast Asian Study in Thailand and Myanmar. Both studies have explored the baseline epidemiology of malaria transmission in more than 30,000 people in more than 6 transmission provinces in Thailand and Myanmar. She has collaborated with many researchers and helped build the capacity of those needing to improve their skills in malaria research and to build the capacity of insectary staff to work on malaria transmission in local vector species.
